Celebrate Northern Plains Indigenous cultures this National Indigenous Peoples Day at Wanuskewin!

Presented by Nutrien, National Indigenous People’s Day Celebration is an annual day celebrating Indigenous cultures, histories, and teachings.

What activities are happening?

Dance / Drum Presentations
  • Dance / Drum Presentations will be taking place throughout the day.
  • Join us for an opportunity to see a variety of different powwow dance styles and learn more about the importance of dance and the drum to Indigenous communities.
Keynote Speaker Jessica Genereaux – Indigenous Storytelling in Saskatchewan – A path to reconciliation 
  • Join keynote speaker Jessica Genereaux at 1:00 p.m.
  • Description: Library Services for Saskatchewan Indigenous People have been working towards reconciliation of indigenous narratives though storytelling for 23 years with the Saskatchewan Indigenous Storytelling Project. Jessica Generoux, Project Coordinator, will share experiences on the project- processes, successes and challenges throughout the years as well as unique insight into the teachings of storytelling and what the future holds for indigenous narratives in communities across the province
  • Biography: Jessica Genereaux is Cree/Nakota/Scottish mother and librarian from Sturgeon Lake First Nation, treaty 6 territory. Jessica grew up listening to stories from her grandparents Bill and Vicky Wilson, a Scottish immigrant and a residential school survivor and fierce advocate for indigenous rights, both inspired her lifelong pursuit learning and advocacy. The impact of intergenerational trauma has motivated Jessica to pursue intergenerational healing today as a mother and professional through cultural revitalization.
Storytelling Session Randy Morin
  • Randy Morin is a language keeper from the Big River First Nation, which is located on Treaty 6 territory. He holds a B.A in Indigenous Studies (University of Regina), B.Ed. (University of Saskatchewan), and M.Ed. in Indigenous Language Revitalization (University of Victoria). He is a lifelong learner of Plains Cree traditions and is a fluent speaker of the nehiyaw Cree language. He shares his knowledge as an Assistant Professor with the Department of Indigenous Studies at the University of Saskatchewan teaching nêhiyawêwin/Cree language, and as an accomplished author of four Cree Children’s books and one Cree survival phrase book with more books forthcoming.
  • Head down to the Tipi Village (weather pending) to join a storytelling session with Randy Morin from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Hide Teachings
  • Elissa Brown is a Métis artist and hide maker who uses traditional skills to express her art and share her teachings with community. She is currently doing an Artist-in-Residence here at Wanuskewin.
  • Hide teachings will run in the Awasis Classroom from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a lunch break closure at some point.
Saskatoon Public Library Community LEGO® Mosaic
  • Saskatoon Public Library will be on-site with Where We Grow, a large-scale community LEGO® mosaic that will, when completed, be made up of 256,000+ LEGO pieces and measure over 10′ wide and 16′ tall
  • The completed mosaic will feature artwork inspired by Saskatchewan plants

Saskatchewan Archaeological Society (SAS)
  • Join the SAS in the mihko-piyēsiew Lab to learn more about Saskatchewan archaeology and archaeological efforts undertaken at Wanuskewin over the past forty years.
Plant Walks with Ethnobotanist Sandra Walker
  • Join ethnobotanist and educator Sandra Walker on a plant walk throughout the opimihaw Valley focused on plants and their uses.
  • Sandra Walker has spent her life first learning about wild foods and plants and then teaching others about them as an educator in Saskatchewan for major local nature centres, schools, and as a favilitator at Wanuskewin. She has a double honours degree in Archaeology and Anthropology and fine arts from the University of Saskatchewan. She is a nature columnist and author of several publications, books, and educational plans.
Gallery Tours of You See Me/Kiwapamin in the Greg Yuel Gallery
  • Join Rowen Dinsmore, co-founder and Curatorial Advisor at The 525 Art Collective, for tours of You See Me/Kiwapamin. Wanuskewin Curator, Marcel Robitaille, will be joining the tours to answer any questions the public may have.
  • Tours will take place in the Greg Yuel gallery at 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.
Visitor Services Programming
  • Join our interpretive guides throughout the day for public programming focused on Northern Plains Indigenous cultures.
 Bannock Bake in the Tipi Village
  • Swing by the Tipi Village for a public Bannock Bake and taste some fresh bannock from the fire.
