We are pleased to invite you to the opening reception of How High Do The Treaties Reach, an exhibition that was created with Audie Murray
How High Do the Treaties Reach? borrows its title from Lera Kotsyuba’s essay “Star Stories and Indigenous Resistance Against Light Pollution,” where she asks this question in relation to Indigenous connections with the sky amid the ongoing realities of colonization. In this exhibition, Audie Murray considers the sky as a connection to place that moves beyond imposed borders and systems of classification, while also carrying the effects of settler colonialism.
The exhibition brings together personal, inherited, and institutional forms of memory. Included are two childhood photographs of the artist connected to Wanuskewin: one from a family album showing Murray sitting on a taxidermic buffalo, and another found within Wanuskewin’s photo collections. Through these images, alongside works made by the artist’s mother and son, ancestral artworks from the museum’s collection, and large-scale bead weavings, Murray reflects on the many forms collections and archives can take. Together, these works form an intergenerational constellation of objects and relations, blurring the categories and borders often imposed on Indigenous peoples and communities.
Audie had created the pieces for How High Do the Treaties Reach? during her time in residency here in April, 2026.
