Chris Chipak is an Indigenous artist and illustrator. He is a member of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation and currently resides in Saskatoon, SK. Chris uses his art to promote cultural education and represent the Treaty 6 territory. His works are inspired by animals, cultural teachings and the willingness to build connection through visual storytelling.
Wanuskewin Galleries presents From the Beginning, created by Artist-in-Residence Chris Chipak.
From the Beginning was developed during Chris Chipak’s winter residency at Wanuskewin, where he spent several weeks working primarily in acrylic. The residency gave him space to revisit Cree stories, and create works that speak to them.
The title speaks to both a personal milestone and a way of thinking about creation. This moment marks the realization of a long held goal of becoming a full time artist, while also recognizing that there is no single starting point. Across the exhibition, there are themes of connection and relationship that move naturally through the paintings and connect each one together.
From the Beginning invites visitors to slow down, take in the exhibition as a whole, and reflect on how stories, ideas, and moments are always in motion rather than fixed in place.
Organized as part of the Olivia and Greg Yuel Artist-in-Residence Program.
