Poppy Pin Workshop

Honouring the importance of Remembrance Day.
By remembering, we pay tribute to members of the Canadian Armed Forces and those around the world who served to defend our values and freedoms. We also honour those who continue to serve our country today.
We are offering a Poppy Pin beading workshop hosted by Plains Cree beadwork artist Keith Sunchild. This workshop is for all levels, no experience needed and for ages 15+.
Free parking and admission to the site, trails and exhibits are included in the cost.
Coffee, tea, and water will be provided as refreshments
For lunch, our restaurant will be open, or you can feel free to bring your own lunch.

Code Talkers
While Indigenous soldiers again served as snipers and scouts, as they had during the First World War, they also took on interesting new roles during this conflict. One unique example was being a “code talker.” Men like Charles “Checker” Tomkins of Alberta translated sensitive radio messages into Cree so they could not be understood if they were intercepted by the enemy. Another Cree-speaking “code talker” would then translate the received messages back into English so they could be understood by the intended recipients.

Keith Sunchild
Keith Sunchild is a Plains Cree artist from Thunderchild First Nation, Saskatchewan. He has been beading for over 15 years. It all started from a beading project in a cultural Cree class in high school and his passion for beading grew from there. Throughout the years, Keith has created beaded products such as earrings, barrettes, lanyards and card holders as well as fully beaded regalia accessory sets. He now helps to facilitate workshops at Wanuskewin, sharing the knowledge that he acquired over his many years of beading.
“Once I was taught how to make a beaded lanyard, I haven’t put down my beading needle since and now here I am 16 years later, still doing the thing that I love and I continue to enjoy creating beautiful beaded pieces for others.”
